Baa! Sheep Facts:Sheep are docile, gentle animals with a lot to offer a hobby farm or commercial endeavor. Sheep provide meat, wool, and milk. For many family farms, sheep are the cuddliest part of their operation, and that's not a baa-d thing!
Space requirements: May vary depending on the type of space and purpose of housing sheep. Plan for 16 to 25 square feet of indoor space per lamb, and up to half acre of outdoor space for every 2 sheep. Average days to reach market weight: Lambs start at 10 to 14 pounds at birth, then can be weaned at 2 months of age. In 5 to 7 months, lambs should reach their ideal finished weight of 115 to 120 pounds. Average lactation: For non-specialized breeds 100 to 200 pounds of milk per lactation (per season) is the norm. Sheep produce higher fat and protein content in milk compared to cows and goats.
