Moo-ve on over!

One of the most satisfying things about farm life is to be able to enjoy a meal and realize nearly everything on your plate came from your own work. That's especially important when it comes to the meat on your plate. You know how that animal was treated, what it was fed and how the process of slaughtering and processing was done. If you are new to raising beef here are a few tips on getting started:
  • Consider the space they will occupy. Proper fencing is critical to not only keep your livestock in, but to keep unwanted predators out. There is safety in a herd, but if your plan is to raise a small number at a time it might be better to have a smaller sheltered area for overnight containment. This will also help in observing any issues that an animal may be experiencing that could require treatment or isolation.
  • Plan for the amount of feed needed. If you buy calves that have been weaned, they can get by on grass and water. If your supply of grass pasture is limited, find a source of quality hay to supplement the available grass. Having a sturdy feed bunk or hay ring will help reduce waste. Your animals will need to be able access water when needed. For a small herd, a stock tank may be sufficient. During cold weather, a tank heater may be needed to keep the water from freezing.
  • Timely vaccinations are critical to overall health. Ask a veterinarian that specializes in large animals about the type and time to vaccinate your animals and keep good records of the applications of any medications.
  • Cleanliness has benefits. Keeping the space free from accumulating manure or regularly adding bedding will reduce flies and other issues that can develop from animals having to stand in mud or manure. Stockpiling manure for future use as fertilizer is another benefit of raising your own animals.
